It was a weekend of fun, endurance, sweat and celebration all in one as the last Lucky Star Marathon & Cycle Tour concluded on Saturday, 1 October 2016 at the Jan Wilken Stadium in Walvis Bay.

This year’s event, sadly sponsored for the last time by Lucky Star, saw a record number of entries with more than 1000 participants competing in running and cycling events including a marathon, half marathon, 10km fun run and school relay event as well as a 105km cycling, 21km mountain bike and 21km fat bike and a 5km kiddies event.

Nationals from neighbouring South Africa, Botswana, Zambia and further afield including Germany, United Kingdom, USA, Japan and Portugal competed in the events alongside runners and cyclists from all over Namibia. The event also included more than 100 school teams from across Namibia who participated in the school relay event.

The overall winners in the main events are as follows:
  • Marathon: Vilho PAULUS (02:19:41)
  • Half-marathon: Pinehas EMBASHU (01:07:23)
  • 105km cycling road race: Drikus COETZEE (02:53:50)

The Lucky Star event is Namibia’s premier coastal sporting event and has been in existence since 1985. The marathon is a favourite among runners as its unique route follows the main road between Swakopmund and Walvis Bay and serves as a qualifier for the Two Oceans and Comrades marathons in South Africa. In 2015 the cycling categories were added to the event with the 105km event sanctioned by the Namibian Cycling Federation.

This year was the last year that the event took place under the Lucky Star banner. The event organisers assured participants that the event will be back under new sponsorship next year.
